GenBeans Integrated Bioinformatics Environment
GenBeans™ is a standalone, rich client platform for bioinformatics. GenBeans offers an Integrated Bioinformatics Environment (IBE) that is currently primarily focused on molecular biology and gives a seamless work experience to research scientists with a fully-integrated toolbox in a rich, user-friendly, graphical interface. GenBeans is free of charge for academic and non-profit organizations and individuals.
GenBeans™ is based on NetBeans, a Java-based open-source development environment available for Windows, Mac, Linux, and benefits from all the advantages of NetBeans-derived applications, e.g. cross-platform compatibility, integrated file management, powerful graphical-user-interface with multiple drag-and-drop capabilities, plug-in architecture to add extra functionalities, automatic updates, and a large base of contributors and users.
BioBeans and StarBeans Application Platforms
GenBeans is not directly build on NetBeans, but on two intermediate platforms named BioBeans and StarBeans that can be build and run independently. Both platforms are open-sourced under the same license as NetBeans. StarBeans is the place of choice for those who want to develop and test Java- or Swing-based modules in an environment similar to GenBeans and without the constraints of a closed environment; StarBeans can be downloaded here. BioBeans incoporates extra modules related to biology such as BioJava and parts of GenBeans code that has been open-sourced. BioBeans page can be found here.
